Violca glared at him.

“Why’re you here? What do you want with me?”

Chase stepped closer to her and reached up to touch her cheek, dropping his hand when she flinched before he could touch her.

“I’m here because I wanted to make sure you’re safe.”

She snorted at him and he couldn’t help but smile at the unfeminine sound.

“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”

She pushed her hair back from her face and looked up at him, her voice lowering to almost a whisper, “Why did you kiss me? Was it just to get close to me?”

Chase saw a flash of hurt in her eyes and he stepped in front of her, cupping her cheek, making sure she looked at him when he answered, “I kissed you because there was no way I could be near you and not.”
